Basically, an enormous cooking pot made out of cast iron or aluminum that you use to cook outside. Some of them look like cauldrons or big kettles.
There are smaller ones that you can use to cook on your stove. You can cook just about anything in them, so they are versatile.

This is a Dutch Oven:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/23/Dutch-ovens.jpg

Basically it's a pot with two small handles on either side and a well fitting lid. If you don't have a dutch oven, don't fret! Just use any standard pot that will hold the equivalent amount that your recipe calls for.

The benefit of a dutch oven is that it can go from stove top to oven. It's ideal for stews such as beef bourgignon, where you may have to start the recipe on the stove top and move it to the oven to finish braising the meat.

If your single handled conventional pots are not oven safe then simple start on the oven in a pot, and then transfer to an oven safe dish, pan or casserole to finish in the oven.

See tons of ways around it. Dutch ovens are nice, I have a good stainless steel one by Paderno, but I also enjoy La Creuset one as well. You can find any brand of dutch ovens online or in any store that sells cook wares.

So no a Dutch Oven isn't an appliance. Back in the day of cooking over fires Dutch Ovens were placed on trivets above hot coals then the lids were covered in coals as a way to distribute heat to the contents within. I've baked soda bread this way... but, by no means is this the modern day use of the ovens.

Hope that helps!

A dutch oven is a large, deep cast iron kettle with a lid.

Or my husband's definition of a dutch oven...
when you're lying in bed, you fart and then pull the blankets up over the head of your SO.

The whole point of a Dutch Oven, is that it can be used in a normal oven like a large baking dish: or it can be used outside over coals - some of the coals are also placed on the top surface as well, thus it heats from both top AND bottom.

You can even bake cakes in them, once you get experienced.

I am talking about the traditional - non-electric ones - if there are 'electric' ones, I haven't heard of them.
