A Dutch oven is a thick-walled metal (usually cast iron) cooking pot with a tight-fitting lid. It is similar to the South African potjie. I have added some links below for yummy recipes in case you want to try it out!
A dutch oven is a heavy iron pot with a lid, feet, and a handle for hanging over a fire or it can be placed in the coals of a fire.
I have two answers for you, serious, and 1 off the wall, first serious, a dutch oven is a lidded pot roughly 2-3quarts. the material varies, mostly cast iron. The have a handle on them to suspend them over a camp fire, or in a fireplace. second, its when your husband holds the blanket over your head and f-rts in bed
most coking sets contain a dutch oven usually a five or three quart one. they are the larger pots in the set of cookware you buy. also they can be cast iron also. they are good for cooking stews, chili’s,and sauces.
A Dutch oven is a big cast-iron pot with a domed lid. Some come just as described – a black iron pot, like from Lodge Manufacturing – while some are coated in colorful enamel, like Le Cruset. They come in several sizes. The enamel-coated ones are easy to keep clean but very expensive. There are also cast Dutch ovens that come with three short legs and a cover with a rim. Those are properly called "camp ovens" and are meant to be used over a campfire using wood or charcoal. Some of these are large enough to roast a 20-pound turkey in. Either way – black iron or enameled – they are extremely versatile. The iron ones are admittedly heavy – you can find some Dutch ovens cast from aluminum, but they can’t take the heat that an outdoor fire can produce, so you can’t just pop ‘em on a fire grate and walk away. Cooking in cast iron out of doors takes practice, but it is a unique challenge. How about a wedding cake baked in one? It’s been done, and turned out well!
